Lakeland Community College is seeking a Bookstore Manager to manage and supervise the college's bookstore operations in a manner consistent with the established mission of the College and Bookstore. The bookstore manager will evaluate, determine and direct the strategic position of this operation; manage departmental operations and personnel assigned; set goals and objectives for department; ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of course materials; evaluate profitability of operations; determine staffing, identify and recommend new hires, and evaluate personnel.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Non-inclusive)
- Responsible for all operational functions of the Bookstore and is accountable for Bookstore assets, profitability, and customer service.
- Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction by delivering customer service in accordance with the College’s and Bookstore’s mission statements.
- Implement policies, procedures, and standards for Bookstore operations.
- Maintain effective communications with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and vendors.
- Prepare and administer an approved budget including personnel, operating expenses, and capital expenses.
- Implement appropriate sales/merchandising and inventory/purchasing programs ensuring acceptable levels of sales and earnings levels.
- Manage all aspects of internal accounting and operational control in the Bookstore; oversee custody of Bookstore assets (cash, receivables, inventory, and equipment); prepare, review, and analyze all financial reports; implement any changes necessary to keep within given budget.
- Select, supervise, train, and evaluate the performance of staff including student assistants.
- Develop and implement effective cross training of all Bookstore functions and support all supervisory and staff operational activities in the Bookstore.
- Oversee coordination of all course materials; purchasing and distribution from faculty, deans, publishers, and students. Assist faculty and Bookstore staff with the procurement and delivery of e-books and inclusive access course materials.
- Work with Bookstore staff in qualifying and negotiating book, clothing and supply purchases; ensure appropriate inventory deliveries occur; make price and comparison studies; keep current on new products, services, and methods of dealing with bookstore retailing.
- Coordinate the processing of orders received through the bookstore’s website. Serve as administrator on selected social media platforms to provide immediate information to customers and receive feedback about services provided. Maintain bookstore website and implement marketing calendar, act as liaison between the Bookstore and Marketing Department.
- Administer Bookstore computer network and systems including Booklog, and VitalSource systems.
- Plan, implement, and maintain acceptable space utilization in order to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
- Remain up-to-date with trends and marketing affecting the College market.
- Ensure understanding and College compliance with all appropriate governmental regulations on related retailing and operational safety concerns/aspects
- Perform daily duties relative to opening and closing the Bookstore.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience/Training
- Associate's degree, preferably in business management or retailing, and three years of full-time experience managing a retail bookstore including responsibility for buying books and supervising staff.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred and/or supervisory work experience in a college bookstore preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles of supervision, retail operations, marketing and merchandising; and basic principles of governmental regulations with regard to safety.
- Knowledge and skills with technology, systems, and websites including textbook programs, inventory control, and point-of-sale.
- Knowledge of Courseworks textbook inventory control and Booklog point-of-sale systems preferred.
- Skills in effectively administering and controlling a diverse number of bookstore sub-operations and work force; managing a profit-making operation; excellent oral and written communications.
- Abilities to exercise good judgment; develop and maintain effective interpersonal professional relations at all levels within as well as outside the College.
- Abilities to properly apply departmental policies and procedures, exercise sound judgment, model work methods and behaviors.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a 12-month, full-time position.
The annual salary is at grade 4 of the administrative and supervisory/professional salary schedule. See Lakeland Compensation and Benefits for administrative employees. The hiring range for this position is $56,735 - $64,536 depending on qualifications and experience.
